The Chancellor
Wolfgang Lutz MD PhD FDMU
Dublin Metropolitan University is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Dr Wolfgang Lutz as Chancellor of the University.

Prof Lutz was born in 1913 as the son of a general practioner. He studied medicine in Vienna and Innsbruck and after his graduation joined the medical staff at the II. Medizinische Universitaetsklinik in Vienna. There he published several studies on the absorption of dyes and on the enterohapatic circulation.

When working at a medical research institute in Germany, Lutz
sutdied problems of sudden drop pressure during high altitude flights (decompression atelectasis) and aspects of cooling and death from exposure.

As highlight of this work he was able to resuscitate warmblooded animals even after 60 minutes of continuous cardiac arrest and a body temperature of nearly zero celcius.

In 1943 Prof Lutz had tenure at the University of Vienna School
of Internal Medicine.

After the war he established himself in a referral practice in a small town in Austria. As described in his book “Life without Bread”, in 1958 he came into contact with nutritional problems and to the conviction that carbohydrates in the civilized diet play a special pathogenetic role.

This concept he has not abandoned since; it lead to the present universal theory of carbohydrates as chief vermins for civilized mankind. Lutz now practices internal medicine in Salzburg.

In recent years, several books on low-carbohydrate diets by medical doctors and nutritionists have appeared. Some, like those by Dr. Robert Atkins, MD, focused on using low-carb diets for weight loss. Others, like the Protein Power series by the Eades, have focused on the lifestyle of low-carb eating.
None of the titles, however, have applied low-carb eating to a variety of diseases, showing how such a diet directly ameliorates and heals conditions like Crohn's disease, heart disease, and diabetes. With “Life Without Bread”, however, that pattern has ended. In co-authorship with Dr Allan Prof Lutz has done an excellent job of lucidly presenting a systematic approach to low-carb eating, its beneficial effects on a number of disease conditions, and, most importantly, the scientific and clinical data to back up the claims.

Life Without Bread is mostly based on the clinical experience of Prod Dr. Lutz. The results of Lutz' clinical successes have been published in several European medical journals (mostly in German) and he even authored a German version of LWB as far back as 1967 to good response. His work, however, was ignored in the United States. While the USDA was hawking the Food Pyramid with its 6-12 servings of grain products a day to the American public (and most of the Western world following this lead), Prof Dr. Lutz and a handful of brave iconoclasts were preaching the virtues of high protein and fat/low-carb diets for healthy living. After many years, Prof Lutz succeeded in securing an American publisher and the results of his experience and research are now available to all English-speaking people.
