The top part of the shield is commonly called the chief. The red and white background indicates combat with honour on the battlefield, hence the red and white.

In Egypt, some of the earliest images of bow harps are from the Pharaoh's tombs dating some 5,000 years ago. These hieroglyphics show that there were many harps in ancient Egypt.

Harps were very popular in ancient Assyria and Mesopotamia. One of the earliest illustrations of a harp was found in a Babylonian temple. These harps were angled harps with up to 15 strings. The angle harp brought the design of the harp closer to what it is today however the angle harp differs from what we call the harp today in that it lacked the front-piece, column or pillar. The harp symbolises that the University is well-composed of tempered judgment; open to people of all races and creeds without barriers, that is a metaphorical place contemplation; a mystical bridge between heaven and earth.

The Eagle in green on the top left hand side facing symbolising achievement of objectives and does not rest until objective achieved. The Eagle is a strong bird who possesses determination and strength of purpose in protecting its fledglings just as the University nurtures and encourages its students in their quest for a good education.

The Book symbolises manifestation or learning indicating that the University is a seat of learning or a disseminator of education.
